Minister addresses meeting in New Delhi

JAIPUR: Rajasthan Education Minister Ghanshyam Tiwari has urged the Centre to release more funds for implementing the Continuing Education Programme in combination with other scheme of public welfare in the State. He said the remuneration paid to nodal officers and motivators should be enhanced to ensure better results.

Mr. Tiwari, addressing the ninth meeting of the National Literacy Mission Authority in New Delhi on Monday, said as many as 11 districts of Rajasthan were among the 1,500 backward districts on literacy front across the country and the desert State needed special measures in view of its difficult geography and complex social structure.

Union Minister for Human Resource Development Arjun Singh presided over the meeting, while the Union Minister for Panchayati Raj, Manishankar Aiyar, and Education Ministers and academicians from various States were present. Mr. Tiwari said the Continuing Education Programme should be run on the lines of Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan.

The next meeting of the Authority will be held in Rajasthan in September this year. Mr. Tiwari pointed out that though the Centre had agreed to fully fund the programme for the previous five years, the allocation should be increased to bring efficacy to the literacy drive.

"The remuneration is still paid at the rate of Rs. 40 per learner, which is negligible now and needs to be revised to at least Rs. 400,'' he said. The Minister said the State Government had organised 17,000 special camps for women under the programme during the last two years and imparted vocational training to them in addition to education.
