Cooperation to solve water problem sought

Raje inaugurates Bisalpur-Dudu project

JAIPUR: Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje has sought cooperation of all political parties in solving the water problem in the State. A basic commodity like water should not divide the people on the lines of caste, community or political parties, Ms. Raje said. The State Government's action and deeds would not differ in this matter, she assured.

Ms. Raje was inaugurating work on the Rs.283.77-crore Bisalpur-Dudu drinking water project at Dudu, 65 km from here, on Monday. The project, on completion in the next 24 months, would provide water to villages in Tonk, Jaipur and Nagaur districts. The project is being executed in two phases. In the first phase, 1,488 villages and seven towns are to benefit.

Any further delay in water conservation efforts would only result in violence in the State over water sharing, Ms. Raje said addressing a public meeting after the formal launch of the project. The Jal Chetna Yatra's (water awareness campaign) launched by the State Government was to install a new confidence in the people on water availability, she said. Ms. Raje said her Government would ensure drinking water availability to all the villages in the State, carrying it by road or by rail.

Water Resources Minister Sanwarlal Jat informed on the occasion that the State Government had set aside an amount of Rs.5,000 crore for finding solution to water problems. The Bisalpur-Dudu project would also help to overcome the problem of brackish water and the presence of fluoride in the water in the area, he said. The sharing the waters of the Bisalpur dam is a contentious issue in the water scarce Rajasthan.
