CHENNAI: With the new Government in place, it is time for stock taking of the economy of the State. To facilitate this process, a Tamil publication has come out with an exhaustive account of developments in different sectors of the economy during 2001-2006. The publication, broadly divided into four parts, discusses fiscal and administrative reforms, self-help groups, panchayat raj institutions, millennium development goals, power sector reforms, and infrastructure development projects in and around Chennai. Issues concerning gender disparities and AIDS eradication have also been dealt with. R. Thangathurai, a former central government official and now running a Tamil journal "Karutthukalam," has brought out the book. He has relied on data from different sources such as reports of the World Bank, Union Planning Commission, Madras School of Economics and the Comptroller and Auditor General, besides works of several economists. Though the reference period of the publication has a political connotation, the author has covered projects initiated by the United Progressive Alliance Government for the welfare of Tamil Nadu in the last two years. Those interested to know further can contact the author at 9381020748 or 55250110.
