Man held for fraud

Two cheated of Rs. 10 lakh each with false job promises

CHENNAI : The Central Crime Branch police have arrested one person on charges of cheating two youths of Rs. 10 lakh each with false promises of jobs in a natural health care centre in the Virgin Islands.

The police are looking for three more persons, including a woman, who are believed to have aided the man in the crime.

Based on a complaint by Raj Khan of Kolapakkam in Tiruvanmiyur, police arrested Ratnesh Bathia on Tuesday.

Ratnesh had assured Regan and Navaneethan, sons of Raj Khan, that he would get them jobs in a naturopathy clinic called The Spa, which he said was run by his younger brother in Virgin Islands. Ratnesh had taken Rs. 20 lakh from the brothers towards expenses and promised a salary of Rs. 1 lakh a month to each of them.

While the police were able to arrest Ratnesh, the whereabouts of his accomplices Jienesh, Mithesh and Manjukumari Jienesh are not known.

The police say all of them were from the same family and were involved in the crime.

Preventive arrests

The Chennai police arrested 120 people as a preventive measure on Monday night. According to them, those who had come to their "adverse notice in previous occasions" were targeted.

Four held for vandalism in Maduravoyal

Four persons have been arrested in connection with the rampage in Mettukuppam in Maduravoyal. The police gave their names as Ramesh, Guru, Shankar and Rajasekhar, all aged around 20 years.

The police received a complaint on Sunday that these youths had broken windowpanes in several houses including that of a retired village administrative officer and damaged an auto rickshaw when the VAO and a few residents in the area refused the youths permission to play cricket near the residential area.

Break-in attempt foiled by shopkeeper

G. Kumar, 35, of Jamunamathur, was arrested by the Koyambedu police and remanded to 15 days' judicial custody on Tuesday for attempting to break into a shop.

According to the police, Kumar had tried to break into a vegetable shop (D 59) on Tuesday when the owner of the shop who was talking to friends nearby noticed Kumar trying to break into his shop. They handed over the culprit to the Koyambedu police.
