CHENNAI: Students of Chennai kept up their reputation of securing some of the top scores in the All-India Secondary School Examination (Class XII) conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) in March. Nivedita Bhaskar of P.S. Senior Secondary School and Suman Pravagiri of Sri Sankara Senior Secondary School scored 97.6 per cent (488/500). Both had opted for the Science stream. V.R. Manikandan of Chettinad Vidyashram scored 97.2 per cent (486/500) in the Commerce stream.
Pass percentage up
Declaring the results here on Tuesday, regional officer R. Neelamegam said a pass percentage of 91.45 was recorded in the zone (comprising Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Goa, Pondicherry, Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Daman and Diu), an increase of 1.35 percentage points over that of last year. Of the 4,206 students who appeared from Tamil Nadu, 4,012 passed. "The overall results have been very satisfactory," said Mr. Neelamegam.
Extra revision time
Academicians felt the increase in pass percentage could be attributed to, among other reasons, the provision of an additional 15 minutes for students to read the question paper thoroughly. S.S. Nadan, principal of Bala Vidya Mandir says, "The extra time would have brought down the initial fear and tension to a considerable extent." Students too felt the 15 minutes apart from the three hours' writing time was a boon. R. Karthik of D.A.V. Mogappair, who scored 487, used the extra time to read through the question paper carefully. "I identified questions that could be attempted first and divided my time accordingly," he says. Other star performers from leading city schools include Atulya.Y and Anirudh Ragavendra of DAV Gopalapuram, S. Swarun Kumar and Deepan Palguna of P.S.Senior, all of them scoring 487 in the Science stream. Rahul Srinivasan of Padma Seshadri, Nungambakkam scored 485 and K.Annapoorna of Bala Vidya Mandir got 480 in the Commerce stream. Since the CBSE abolished the ranking system a few years ago, students would not be awarded ranks based on their marks. However, they would be graded according to their relative performance at national level. For instance, students securing marks within the top 0.2 percentage of scores would get an A1 grade. Mr. Neelamegam said compartmental examinations would be held in July for students who failed in one subject. He added that Class X results were likely to be declared this weekend.
