COIMBATORE: Children should never be punished through physical violence. Corporal punishment only damages their character, said D.K. Nemenathan, Director and Consultant Paediatrician of Coimbatore Child Trust. Nearly 150 Self-Help Group (SHG) members and their children gathered at the Ramanathapuram Corporation Girls High School here on Tuesday to participate in the discussion organised by the Trust on the ways to bring up children. "A child should be treated only as a child. Parents often expect them to behave like adults causing a lot of confusion in children's mind," he said. Nearly 15 SHGs participated in the interactive programme. It discussed the health requirements of children, their behavioural development and methods of starting the process of education at home. "The purpose of conducting such a programme for SHG members is that the message reaches a wider group of people," Dr. Nemenathan said. Each participant would go back to their larger groups and convey the message. During the formative years of the child, the mother should spend quality time with her. Leaving the child in the care of others in the first three years after birth was not advisable, he said. Most of the households treated the boy and the girl child differently, which created false notions in children's minds of their own capacities. Parents should take care to treat them equally.
