CHAOS PREVAILS: M.G. Road near Statue junction in the city. Photo: S. Mahinsha
Thiruvananthapuram: Chaotic traffic conditions prevailing along the arterial road and many busy junctions in the capital city on account of the construction of the flyover at Bakery junction and road widening works on various busy stretches are set to worsen with educational institutions reopening next week, monsoon setting in and delay in completing the works. The woes of road users, especially the motorists, will be compounded with an estimated 600 vehicles of the educational institutions ferrying in children to the schools plying the roads from June 1. At present, traffic curbs prevail along the Panchapura junction-Bakery junction-Model School junction-Thampanoor stretch on account of the construction of the flyover at Bakery junction. Long distance buses of KSRTC originating from Thampanoor and proceeding via the NH 47 and M.C. Road are now being diverted through Thycaud flyover, Mettukada and Xanadu. While some buses turn left from Xanadu to proceed to the NH 47 and M.C. Road, others proceed straight via Vazhuthacaud junction, Althara junction, Museum junction, LMS, War Memorial to PMG junction to enter NH 47 and M.C. Road. Often, this leads to chaos near the Guest House, Vazhuthacaud, Althara, Keltron, Museum, LMS and War Memorial junctions. The delay in setting up the median along the widened Vellayambalam-Kanakakunnu Palace stretch is posing problem. Traffic personnel are not seen at many junctions. The situation will worsen, as there will be heavy traffic along the stretch towards Vazhuthacaud and Thycaud once the schools reopen. The KSRTC buses from Thampanoor proceeding to Nedumangad are being diverted via Overbridge through M.G. Road and this often leads to traffic snarls and congestion at Ayurveda College, GPO, Statue, University Library and Asan Square. Traffic snarls have become a regular occurrence on the busy stretches even during the non-peak hours. It takes over 25 minutes to commute from Overbridge to LMS junction. Traffic police personnel being posted along the busy stretch are finding it difficult to regulate the traffic. Confusion prevails on the University Library-Asan Square stretch. Despite the death of a woman scooterist in an accident last week, the authorities have not taken any steps to streamline the traffic. The pothole that has surfaced near the second gate of the MLA Hostel has compounded the woes of the motorists, especially two-wheelers users. The delay in completing the road widening of the Vellayambalam-LMS stretch, LMS-Overbridge and Asan Square-Chaka stretch also adds to the woes of the road users.
