Mahant killer held
According to the police, Satbir Dahiya was arrested at Bawana on Monday when he was going to his in-laws' house. The police said Satbir, a member of Kishan Pehalwan gang, was involved in killing Mahant Swami Dharamanand on May 13, 2004. Dharmanand was involved in a war of succession with Ramanand, another disciple of his guru Amritanand who owned Chetanand Ashram Trust. Amritanand had passed away in 2000. Satpal's brother, the village headman, was in favour of Ramanand becoming the mahant. It was at his behest that Satpal and his accomplices killed Dharmanand.
Undertrial `sodomised'
Ranjit complained about the incident after the two were taken to Tihar Central Jail. He was subsequently taken to Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Hospital where the assault was confirmed.
Held for robberies
Acting on a tip-off that some criminal elements would come to Mustafabad in North-East Delhi, a team led by Gokalpuri Station House Officer laid a trap. Realising that they had been intercepted by the police, the suspects opened fire. But the police managed to overpower four of them, while three others managed to flee. The arrested persons were identified as Shahid, Akram, Shamshad and Furkan, and those who escaped were identified as Noor Alam, Fazlu and Arshad. During interrogation, the accused confessed to their involvement in robberies committed in Shiva Vihar, Chaman Park, Bhagirathi Vihar and Karawal Nagar areas.
Arrested on bribe charges
According to a press release, N.K.K. Nair approached the CBI inspector and offered him bribe to hush up the case of disproportionate assets against him. The inspector reported the matter to his seniors, following which a trap was laid and Nair asked to make the payment at Ernakulam. He was caught red-handed and was later produced in an Ernakulam court that remanded him to judicial custody. In another case, the CBI arrested a manager of the Muzaffarnagar branch of UCO Bank in Uttar Pradesh on charges of demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs. 15,000 from a person to process his loan and credit card applications.
