NEW DELHI: An alleged gangster wanted by the Uttaranchal police in connection with the murder of a "mahant" in Hardwar two years ago, has been arrested by the Crime Branch of the Delhi police.

According to the police, Satbir Dahiya was arrested at Bawana on Monday when he was going to his in-laws' house.

The police said Satbir, a member of Kishan Pehalwan gang, was involved in killing Mahant Swami Dharamanand on May 13, 2004. Dharmanand was involved in a war of succession with Ramanand, another disciple of his guru Amritanand who owned Chetanand Ashram Trust. Amritanand had passed away in 2000.

Satpal's brother, the village headman, was in favour of Ramanand becoming the mahant. It was at his behest that Satpal and his accomplices killed Dharmanand.
