Shantanu continues his good run, dumps Yash

BELGAUM: Wild card Shantanu Rajpu of Delhi continued his good run, knocking out yet another seeded player Yash Deshmukh 6-3, 6-0 and entered the semifinals of the boys under-16 singles in the AITA Super Series under-16 tennis championships at the District Stadium courts here on Wednesday.

Fourth seed Gugan Verma of Tamil Nadu warded off stiff resistance from Karnataka's Chetan Pandit before prevailing 6-7 (7), 6-1, 6-3. M.A. Naveen of Tamil Nadu and Lakshith Sood of Delhi also made it to the semifinals.

Yamini Reddy of Karnataka defeated third seed S. Dipati of West Bengal 6-3, 6-7(5), 6-4. In another upset, Arushi Sharma of Delhi beat eighth seed V. Deepna of Maharashtra 6-4, 5-7, 6-4. Nimisha Mohan of Karnataka and Rishika Sunkar of Delhi were the other qualifiers for the last-four round.

The results (quarterfinals): Boys under-16 singles: Shantanu Rajput (Del) bt Yash Deshmukh (Mah) 6-3,6-0; M.A.Naveen (TN) bt Himanshu Mali (Mah) 6-2, 6-3; Gugan Verma (TN) bt Chetan Pandit (AP) 6-7 (7-9), 6-1, 6-3; Lakshith Sood (Del) bt Vinayak Sharma (AP) 6-3, 4-6, 6-2.

Girls: under-16 singles: Nimisha Mohan (Kar) bt M. Divya Rao (AP) 6-4, 6-3; Yamini Reddy (Kar) bt S. Dipati (WB) 6-3, 6-7 (5-7), 6-4; Arushi Sharma (Del) bt V. Deepna (Mah) 6-4, 5-7, 6-4; Rishika Sunkar (Del) bt Sharon S. Paul (TN) 6-1, 6-1.

Fastest serve contest

The third leg of the `Active Fastest Serve' contest will be held at the Karnataka State Lawn Tennis Association Stadium courts here on May 27. The event is being sponsored by Dabur Foods Ltd., which had hosted the first two legs in Mumbai and Delhi.

The top 10 in each group will qualify for the second round and the winner and runner-up in each section from the second round will be awarded a trophy and certificate, apart from gift vouchers from adidas and a year's supply of Real Active fruit juice.

The fastest server across all categories will win a six-week training scholarship at Mahesh Bhupathi Tennis Academy. The contest will be held in three categories — under-16 boys and girls, 16-25 men and women and over 25 men. The event will begin at the KSLTA at 7 a.m. and entry forms are available at the stadium (Ph: 22869797, 22861010).
