dated May 26, 1956: Crisis in East Bengal

The East Bengal Governor, Mr. A.K. Fazlul Huq, on May 24 prorogued the Provincial Assembly, two days after it had been adjourned indefinitely by the Speaker following his decision that the Government could not present the budget. The Speaker had given his ruling after a seven-hour debate during which Opposition members challenged the competence of the United Front Ministry of Mr. Abu Hossain Sarkar to put forward a budget. Swift developments in the political situation are expected by political observers following the Governor's decision. They expect the Sarkar Ministry to go out of office by May 31 and the Governor to certify the budget. Meanwhile, Shaikh Mujibur Rahman, MLA and general secretary of the East Pakistan Awami League, claimed in a statement that the Opposition had an overwhelming majority in the House and the Sarkar Ministry had no right to continue. He said the Governor should call the Opposition leader who had majority to form a new Government.
