This Day That Age
The Indo-Pakistan dispute over the evacuee property left by the displaced persons in either country has reached a stalemate. While the Government-to-Government level settlement of the problem is not acceptable to Pakistan, the Government of India has found Pakistan's proposal for settlement on individual basis wholly unacceptable. The Pakistan Rehabilitation Minister has now written to his Indian counterpart, Mr. Mehr Chand Khanna, inviting new proposals for settlement of the dispute. This gesture from Pakistan does not in fact improve the position. Though no way out is seen at present, the Government of India is not likely to close the door but keep on hammering. The Pakistan Government's proposal for settlement on individual basis was sent to India towards the end of last year. The Government of India could not accept the proposal for the simple reason that this would adversely affect the small claimants.
