Fair balance

The editorial `A fair balance of reservations' (May 25) is praiseworthy. It has dealt with all key aspects of the reservation policy in detail. But whether the policy will be result-oriented is anyone's guess. For, programmes initiated with fanfare usually languish later due to paucity of funds. It may not be too late for the Centre to set up more schools at the primary and secondary levels and develop them into centres of excellence.

U. Muralikrishna,
Visakhapatnam, A.P.

The UPA dispensation should heed your advice and retain prestigious institutions such as IITs, IIMs, AIIMS, etc., as "islands of excellence" and not compromise in any manner their entrance standards.

K. Natarajan,
Thiruvananthapuram

The Government has promised that the number of seats will be suitably increased to ensure that the general availability of seats is not affected. But the time frame for adding the infrastructure and identifying faculty has not been mentioned. Diluting quality will be disastrous for the reputation of the IITs and the IIMs.

R. Vasudevan,
Chennai

The rationale behind the promise to increase the total number of seats so as to retain the existing number under the open category is not clear. However, for the first time, the Government has indirectly admitted that the reservation policy will cause a loss to students in the open category.

P.R.V. Raja,
Pandalam, Kerala
