  • One lakh rain water pits to be dug
  • Epidemic Crisis Management committee to supervise sanitation drive

KOZHIKODE: The Koyilandy municipality has drawn up a number of programmes to effectively tackle the monsoon situation, Municipal Chairperson, K. Dasan said.

Speaking to The Hindu here on Monday, Mr. Dasan said with this in view, a programme has been drawn up that includes de-silting of ponds and wells, awareness programmes on rain water harnessing methods, conservation of wetlands and digging of rain water pits.

"Except for the Puliyancheri pond in ward three, and the Thevar pond at Panthalayini, the majority of the 50 odd ponds in the municipal limits are under private possession. We have made a request to take over of these and de-silting will be carried out," he said.

"In case of temple and mosque ponds, the management committees concerned are already doing the needful so that the maximum quantity of water gets stored, " Mr. Dasan said

The managing committee of the Mukhami mosque at Kollam in the municipality has already started de-silting and cleaning the pond embankment.

    Jalamitra project

As part of the initiative, a Jalamitra project has been drawn up and a 23-member group has been set up to spearhead the campaign on water conservation.

"One lakh rain water pits will be dug in the municipality. A comprehensive meeting in this connection with the persons concerned, including Non-Government Organisations (NGOs) and others, is being convened on May 25 to discuss the steps in detail.

A meeting of the Jalamitra volunteers is also being called. The objective is the building of a `Jala samrithi nagaram,' he added.

    Epidemic control

Side by side, the Koyilandy Municipality Action Plan for Epidemic Control, 2006 will combat the prevalence of rain-related diseases such as dengue fever and dysentery.

Preventive therapies will include all streams of medicines such as Homoeopathy and Allopathy.

The Epidemic Crisis Management Committee would supervise the sanitation drive to prevent stagnation of water, conduct checks on food served in hotels and restaurants in the area and conduct awareness .
