VISAKHAPATNAM: The Visakha Air Travellers' Association has asked the authorities to expedite work on the modernisation of INS Dega airport to give a fillip to tourism, trade and industries in the region. The association, which will hold its decennial celebrations here on Saturday, felt that at least night-landing facility should be introduced on a priority basis to enable the airport to have round-the-clock operations.
Night landing
``At present, we are having only limited operations as no flight can take off after sunset. People feel scary to come to Vizag due to uncertainty over flight schedules,'' VATA president D. Panduranga Rao said. Speaking to reporters along with VATA members A.S.N. Prasad, Kasim S. Mehdi and K. Kumar Raja, he said the number of operations would go up once INS Dega turned into a modern airport. He staked claim that after the formation of the association a decade ago, they could achieve rationalisation of fare and timings, air-conditioning of passenger lounge and infrastructure for refreshment. Prof. Rao said the cancellation of flights would also come down once the airport was opened to traffic for 24 hours. "Now if an aircraft develops a snag, it will take at least a few hours for setting it right. Once night landing facility is introduced, it can fly three to four hours behind schedule,'' he averred.
