Four washed away

in flash-flood

BELLARY: Two women, a girl and a boy were washed away in a flash-flood on Wednesday following heavy rain in Hosahalli in Kudligi taluk of Bellary district. According to a complaint filed by Naganna of Hosahalli, heavy rain caused a stream to overflow and water entered a house situated on the bank of the stream and washed away Nagamma, 60, Lakshmamma, 22, Basavaraj, 3, and Gangamma, 2.

All the bodies have been recovered. — Staff Correspondent

Two more associates of naxalite held

BELLARY: The Bellary police have arrested two persons, said to be associates of Ranga Reddy, a naxalite who is wanted by the Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh police. Seven associates of Ranga Reddy have been arrested so far.

Additional Superintendent of Police D.C. Rajappa, said in a press release that Ghouse, a lathe operator in Bellary, and Pal Shivaiah, a resident of Metri village, were arrested based on information provided by Kumar, nephew and close associate of Ranga Reddy, who has already been arrested.

Ghouse is accused of manufacturing parts for guns and supplying them to Ranga Reddy. Shivaiah is accused of circulating fake fifty-rupee notes printed by Ranga Reddy, who is still at large.

Aid for funeral of labourers

MANGALORE: The Union Government will provide a sum of Rs. 1,500 for performing the final rites of labourers employed in the beedi, film and mining industries, according to B. Madhava, president of the State unite of the Centre of Indian Trade Unions. The Centre issued the order on March 10, and the scheme is already in force.

In a press release here on Thursday, Mr. Madhava said that in order to be eligible for the scheme a labourer should have been employed in one of the three industries for at least six months prior to his or her death. — Staff Correspondent

Applications invited for re-evaluation

Bangalore: The Directorate of Pre-University Education has asked candidates who want to get photocopies of evaluated answer sheets and apply for re-evaluation and re-totalling of the results of the second PUC exams of March/April 2006 to submit applications with a demand draft in favour of the Director, Pre-University Education, payable at Bangalore through any nationalised bank, within the stipulated time limit.

Entrance test on Saturday

Belgaum: The KLE Academy of Higher Education and Research, a deemed university, will hold an entrance test for admission to undergraduate courses in medical and dental sciences on May 27 at 1 p.m. at five centres in Belgaum, Bangalore, Pune, Delhi and Hyderabad. Admission tickets have been dispatched to candidates and their list has also been put on the website www.jnmc.edu. Any candidate who has not received the admission ticket can contact the helpdesk at the centre concerned, according to a press release by Registrar B.F. Kotur here on Thursday. — Staff Correspondent

Gen. J.J. Singh to visit regimental centre

Jagjivan Ram's statue to be unveiled

DAVANGERE: Union Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment Meira Kumar, Union Minister of State for Planning M.V. Rajasekharan and Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways K.H. Muniyappa will be present when the statue of Babu Jagjivan Ram in unveiled on the Davangere City Municipality premises on Saturday, City Municipal Council president Shivanahalli Ramesh told presspersons here on Thursday. — Staff Correspondent

Heavy rain lashes Davangere

DAVANGERE: Heavy rain affected life in Davangere city on Thursday evening. The rain that lashed the city between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. forced people to take shelter under trees, buildings and bus shelters. Most roads were flooded and low-lying areas were inundated.

Power supply was cut several times and branches of big trees fell down in many places. Autorickshaw drivers seemed to be making most of the situation by demanding excess fare. The rain brought respite from the sultry weather. — Staff Corerspondent

Pulse Polio drive successful in Belgaum

BELGAUM: The district has exceeded the target by 6.57 per cent in the second phase of the Pulse Polio immunisation programme held on Tuesday. As against the target to administer the vaccine to 5,27,104 children, 5,61, 710 children were administered polio drops all over the district.

Official sources said here on Thursday that 1,28,274 children below five years in urban areas and 4,33,436 children in rural areas benefited from the programme. — Staff Correspondent
