JAIPUR: Congress general secretary Ashok Gehlot has alleged political discrimination in providing employment under drought relief programmes in Rajasthan. The daily earnings of labourers ranged from Rs.25 to Rs.35 and there were also widespread complaints of inadequate number of cattle camps and fodder depots besides lack of provision for drinking water, Mr.Gehlot said after a two-day tour of drought affected areas in Jodhpur district. Mr.Gehlot who toured villages in Phalodi, Shergarh and Balesar tehsils said employment under drought relief works was confined to those associated with a particular political party. The Congress supporters were being singled out for denial of employment, he charged. "It is grossly unfair to deny a needy person employment under relief works. Political considerations should not be the criteria in such human aspects," Mr.Gehlot said.
No better position
Those who were lucky enough to get employment were also in no better position as they were underpaid. "They are finding it difficult to support a family with a daily wage of Rs.25-35," he pointed out.
Condition of villages
Mr.Gehlot asked the State Government to ensure employment to all the needy persons and payment of minimum wages to those employed. The condition in many villages was grim and the State Government should act fast to provide relief to the affected, he said.
