Call for an integrated approach towards art, culture and tourism

Special Correspondent

CHANDIGARH: Punjab Governor and Administrator of the Union Territory of Chandigarh, S.F. Rodrigues, on Thursday called for adoption of an integrated view to synthesise the elements of art, culture and tourism in the concept plan for remodelling of Kalagram and making it an important focal point for the northern region for the projection of its rich heritage.

On a visit to Kalagram, he emphasised the importance of infrastructure development with the addition of permanent and seasonal handicrafts stalls for the different States, opening up a new intimate theatre, new gallery for art objects, modernisation of the lighting system, multi-level parking and traffic circuits to ensure easy access to different venues and places of interest.

He also called for creating a correct ambience and providing top quality services at an affordable cost to the people visiting this place of tourist interest.

Accompanied by his wife Jean Rodrigues, UT Home Secretary Krishna Mohan, CITCO Managing Director Jasbir Singh Bir, North Zone Cultural Centre (NZCC) Director R.T. Jindal and other senior officers, Gen. Rodrigues, who is also the NZCC Chairman, examined the existing facilities available in the complex. He asked the officers to prepare a concept paper with innovative and architecturally sound designs within a week to equip Kalagram with state-of-the-art facilities and to start the restructuring work immediately.

He said NZCC must create well-structured programmes which could develop the artistic excellence of amateur artistes and enable the younger generation to imbibe the rich value of Indian culture.
