MANGALORE: "I used to go for group studies with my friends and classmates which helped us solve problems in mathematics and physics which ultimately gave all five of us good results," says Hemanth Kumar of Canara Pre-University College, topper in the pre-university examination in the district (581 marks).

He told The Hindu that he dreamt of becoming a specialist doctor. There was something about medicine which he could not ignore and had decided to study it. His uncle, I.G. Bhat, was a neurologist. His cousin was a clinical oncologist, he said. Hemanth, who is a keen in participating in quiz competitions, won The Hindu Young World Quiz in 2005 along with his team and was the runner up in the same quiz competition in 2004. He also won the India-France quiz in 2004 and visited France, his father Vasanth Kumar Rao, a bank employee said.

Hemanth appeared for the AIEEE and secured 161st rank which enables him to take up engineering course in an Indian Institute of Technology. But Hemanth is keen on medicine. He has also appeared for the All India Pre-Medical Test. Venisha Rodrigues from St. Aloysius College, who has secured 579 marks, is keen on taking up a professional course.
College principal Swebert D' Silva said Venisha was a bright student. Teachers appreciated her meticulous methods of learning, the principal said.
