Samiti for categorisation within quota

Staff Correspondent

Two-day symposium begins in Raichur tomorrow

BELLARY: The Karnataka unit of Madiga Meesalati Horata Samiti has decided to intensify its agitation seeking categorisation within the reservation provided to Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, by involving the units in all southern States.

A beginning in this regard will be made at a two-day symposium organised by the samiti at Pandit Siddaram Jambaldinni Rangamandira in Raichur on May 28 and 29.

Apart from political leaders and intellectuals from the State, Muthuswamy of Namakkal in Tamil Nadu and Muthaiah of Osmania University, Hyderabad, would participate in the symposium, H. Hanumanthappa, State unit secretary and Janata Dal (S) leader, told presspersons here on Friday.

Mr. Hanumanthappa expressed concern over the "failure" of the Janata Dal (S) and Bharatiya Janata Party coalition Government to fulfil its promise to release funds and other facilities to the one-man commission set up by the Government to look into the matter. He said that when a delegation of the samiti met Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy, Deputy Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa and Social Welfare Minister Balachandra Jarkhiholi, they had promised to release funds within 15 days. Three months had passed and not a rupee had been released, he said. To a question, he said that the State Government should come out with a Bill in this regard and forward it to the Union Government for approval.

D. Manjunath, former Minister, will inaugurate the programme. N. Mareppa, president of the State unit, will preside.

K.H. Muniyappa, Union Minister, B.V. Govind Karjol, Hanumanthappa Alkod, both Ministers, would attend the function, he said.
