Cabinet okays renaming of Pondicherry
Special Correspondent
NEW DELHI:
The Union Cabinet on Friday approved a proposal to rename the Union Territory of Pondicherry as Puducherry, in keeping with the resolution passed by the Legislative Assembly of the Union Territory for such a change.
Announcing this, Union Minister and Cabinet spokesperson, Priyaranjan Dasmunsi, said a Bill to give effect to the decision would be introduced during the monsoon session. Puducherry was the name used in ancient times and was changed to Pondicherry by foreign rulers.
The Cabinet also decided to modify the entry on "Thandan" in the Scheduled Castes List for Kerala to exclude Ezhuvas and Thiyyas, who are known as Thandan in the erstwhile Cochin and Malabar areas and carpenters, who are known as Thachan in the erstwhile Cochin and Travancore State.
