Letters to the Editor
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's decision to direct the Union Home Ministry and the Jammu and Kashmir Government to work out a credible mechanism to support the families of terrorists killed by the security forces (May 26) is laudable. However, this will not in anyway stop the terrorists from acting the way they do. The fact that they chose to attack a tourist bus on Thursday reveals their nature. It will be a futile exercise to try and win their hearts. There should be parallel action to curb violence with an iron hand. Dr. Singh's statement, "Ready to talk to militants if they shun arms," is meaningless in this context.
K.R.A. Narasiah,
Dr. Singh should realise that inaugurating bus services and trying to rehabilitate terrorists' families will not bring peace. Firm action is needed.
David Peniel,
The second round table on Kashmir, boycotted by the BJP, the All Parties Hurriyat Conference, and the Shabir Shah group, has turned out to be another official function lacking in credibility.
J.L. Ganjoo,
