Letters to the Editor
The anti-reservation protests by doctors have clearly gone too far and reached a stage where they deserve condemnation for their indifference to the sufferings of patients. That they have even ignored the Prime Minister's appeal to call off the strike is unfortunate.
V. Ramanujam,
The issue appears to be getting out of control with the pro-reservationists rejecting the modified formula and the President's appeal to return to classes. Merit and quality are relative terms and multi-dimensional in character. They cannot be correctly understood by virtue of performance in examinations. Generally, merit is distributed over the entire population, but not fully reflected in examination marks. Since there is no level-playing ground in preparing for the examinations, the performance in the examinations alone cannot be taken as an indicator of merit.
S.S. Rajagopalan,
The Government must abandon its adamant obsession with reservation. It cannot hope to succeed in pushing the idea down the throat of the private sector either. Even if it does, the end result will not benefit the nation. Also, the striking doctors must call off their strike forthwith. The need of the hour is for a middle path that will meet the quest for equity without losing sight of quality and equality.
S. Natarajan,
T. Gowri Shanker,
