Commendable

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi's announcement that the practice of giving "VIP" treatment in temples will be discontinued is commendable. All are equal before god. Also, the Government should instruct the temple administrators not to deny entry to the public during VVIP visits for reasons of security. The latter can be allowed entry at specific times, especially early in the morning.

Sankara Subramonian,
San Jose, California

Why should not VIP treatment for politicians be stopped in temples? They are only elected representatives who are supposed to "serve the people."

S. Janaki,
Chennai

A welcome decision but an exemption must be made for heads of mutts, spiritual leaders, and chiefs of religious sects as they stand on a different footing from the general public.

T. Vasanthi,
Chidambaram, T.N.

Why should traditional practices be suspended without proper reason? The official reason given is that there should be equality in a temple. If so, why should there be reservation in institutions of higher education? They too are temples of learning.

T.V. Suresh,
Coimbatore
