Pondicherry: The election for the post of Speaker of the new Assembly in the Union Territory of Pondicherry will be held on June 1, a release from the secretary of the Assembly M. Sivaprakasam said here on Friday. He said that the Lt. Governor had fixed the date of the election and notices had been sent individually to all legislators. The nominations for the election of Speaker could be filed before the Secretary till noon on May 31. There should be papers proposing the name of the candidate and also seconding it and the candidate so fielded should file a paper expressing his consent to be a nominee for the post, the Secretary said. The election of Deputy Speaker would also be held the same day, he added. The incoming Assembly is the 12th Legislature of Pondicherry, which had its first polls for the Assembly in 1964 after de jure transfer of power in 1962. In the recent polls the Congress-led Democratic Progressive Alliance won twenty seats (Congress 10, DMK 7, PMK 2 and CPI 1) with three Independents elected from Pondicherry and Karaikal regions also pledging support. On the opposition side the AIADMK and Puducherry Munnetra Congress have three members each and the Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam has one member.
