MOSCOW: The only surviving attacker on a school in Beslan in southern Russia was sentenced to life in prison on Friday. A court in southern Russia found Nurpashi Kulayev guilty of murder and terrorism and said he deserved the death penalty but Russia has a moratorium on capital punishment. On September 1, 2004, a group of Chechen-led rebels seized over 1300 hostages at a school in Beslan during a festive opening of a new academic year. Three days later, 331 hostages, more than half of them children, died during a bloody storming of the school by Russian security forces. Prosecutors said 31 rebels had also been killed in the attack, including two Arabs whose nationality is still to be identified. Chechen warlord Shamil Basayev who is still at large in Chechnya took responsibility for the raid.
