MADURAI: The Tamil Nadu Chamber of Commerce and Industry has hailed the move to revive farmers' markets. Welcoming "progressive schemes" announced in the Governor's address, Chamber president S. Rethinavelu in a statement recalled that the farmers' markets were started in 1999 by Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi to ensure remunerative price for farm produce while enabling the public to procure fresh vegetables at cheaper rates. He welcomed the proposal to revive traders' welfare board and the Tamil Nadu Legislative Council and restore the capital subsidy scheme for small-scale units in industrially backward areas. Mr. Rethinavelu appreciated the "healthy trend" set by Mr. Karunanidhi who had decided to continue some of the welfare schemes, such as the free bicycle scheme for Plus Two students, introduced by the previous regime. The chamber also welcomed the nomination of industrialist Karumuttu T. Kannan as a member of the reconstituted State Planning Commission. It expressed the confidence that the Commission would facilitate the setting up of infrastructure required for accelerating industrial and economic growth in the State, especially in the southern districts. The Tamil Nadu Post-Graduate Teachers' Association has welcomed the announcements on regularisation of services of teachers who were appointed on consolidated pay scales by the previous Government, filling up of existing vacancies and the move to do away with entrance examinations for admission to professional courses.
