Need to promote disability studies

NEW DELHI:
Disability studies expert at Jawaharlal Nehru University here, G. N. Karna, has stressed the important role of universities and other institutions of higher learning in promoting teaching of disability studies as an academic discipline.
Presenting a paper at the sixth Annual Disability Studies in Education Conference held at Michigan State University's College of Education recently, Dr. Karna underlined the need for addressing the problem of disability as a human rights and developmental issue.
Dr. Karna said the recent policy announcement of the Indian Government recognising the discipline of disability studies and instituting the Rajiv Gandhi chair(s) in universities and colleges was a landmark development.
