CHANDIGARH: The Haryana Government proposes to set up new Fish Farmers' Development Agencies in Mewat and Panchkula districts to promote pisciculture, the Financial Commissioner and Principal Secretary, Fisheries, H.C. Disodia, said here on Friday. Similar agencies were already operational in 18 districts, he added. He disclosed that this financial year about Rs. 16 crores would be spent for giving a boost to pisciculture. And a new scheme to promote prawn culture would be launched shortly. Subsidies were being given to the farmers and unemployed youth of the State for developing their interest in the rearing of fish. Also, the rearing of two new varieties of fish -- Magur and Singhara -- would be introduced from this year. These new varieties are expected to fetch a price of Rs. 100 per kilogram as compared to the other varieties which are priced around Rs. 25 to Rs. 30 per kg. He stated that Haryana was the second state in the country after Chhattisgarh which had adopted and promoted pisciculture. There are 109 polyculture units in the State out of which 11 have been established in Karnal district. Steps are also being taken for the marketing of fish. And two marketing centres would soon be set up in Bahadurgarh and Gurgaon to motivate the fish producers to take their produce to these sale counters instead of Delhi. Such centres are already operational in Panipat, Jagadhari, and Faridabad. Presently, there are 15 seed farms in the State. Pisci-clinics are also being set up at every farm in which facilities like laboratory and seed treatment would be provided.
