Maths graduate held on burglary charge; stolen goods recovered

  • Resorts to theft to set up own software consultancy
  • Hires a double-bedroom portion to hide stolen property

HYDERABAD: The Banjara Hills police on Friday arrested a graduate in mathematics who allegedly resorted to burglaries with the ambition of setting up his own software consultancy. The arrested, Mohd. Avez Ahmed, 26, even hired a double bedroom portion for a monthly rent of Rs. 3,200 to hide the stolen property, Additional Commissioner of Crimes Rajiv Trivedi told reporters here.

Showing around the house in Sancharapuri Colony of Bowenpally which the accused had taken on rent, Mr. Trivedi said gold ornaments and electronic goods, all worth nearly Rs. 13 lakhs, were recovered. Ahmed hired the house since his father Mohd. Yousuf, a retired Health Inspector from Directorate of Health, used to question him if he took a stolen article to the house.

    First arrest

Nampally police arrested Ahmed first in December 2004 on charge of breaking into a house and misusing a credit card stolen from there. At that time, his father furnished surety and brought Ahmed out on bail. Later, he worked in a private firm for a brief period but subsequently quit the job.

"I couldn't secure a job after that and resorted to offences once again to realise my ambition of setting up a software consultancy," he said replying to a question. Interestingly, he did not misuse the money accrued through the sale of stolen jewellery. "Ahmed deposited Rs. 70,000 which he got after selling the jewellery stolen from a house in S.R. Nagar," Mr. Trivedi explained. He even secured a life insurance policy from a private firm and paid Rs. 20,000 as premium in the past six months.

From December 2005 to this May 23, he allegedly committed 12 burglaries. He adopted a simpler modus operandi of breaking the door hook through which the latch is affixedMr. Trivedi said if adequate publicity is given to various Government-sponsored self-employment schemes, youngsters like Ahmed would not take the path of offences.
