CHENNAI: The Confederation of NGOs in Rural India (CNRI) has set the agenda of sensitising its members to concentrate on income generation activities that would benefit Self-Help Groups and rural unemployed youth.
"The CNRI's focus is to assist grassroots-level NGOs interact with government bodies at the State and Central levels to fund rural development schemes," said K. Bhanu, president, Tamil Nadu chapter, CNRI. "For many of the grassroots NGOs, funds are practically inaccessible. CNRI will represent these NGOs during interactions with State and national bodies," L. V. Saptharishi, Director-General of the Council for Advancement of People's Action and Rural Technology said. "Creating marketing opportunities for the members of CNRI is a serious issue," he feels. "With proper funding and technology assistance, SHGs can manufacture quality products. But merely making these products will not suffice, as income generation has to be done." "This can be done only through right market identification and providing an outlet for CNRI members to sell their produce," Mr. Saptharishi said. To help members market their home products, CNRI in association with the Gandhi Ashram Reconstruction Trust, Delhi will be holding its first National Bazaar at the Gandhi Ashram, Kingsway camp in Delhi.
