TIRUCHI: The central region of the Department of Fire and Rescue Service has established a separate wing for generating and maintaining a computerised database on fire safety procedures, fire hazards and safety measures available in multi-storeyed buildings.

Functioning under the direct supervision of the department's Deputy Director in Tiruchi, the wing has been provided with two computers and accessories by the State Government. An officer in the rank of Assistant Divisional Fire Officer has been assigned the task of manning the "Data Base Folder," which has been functioning since March. Similar facilities have been established at the regional offices of Fire and Rescue Service in Chennai, Madurai and Coimbatore. The central region comprises Tiruchi, Pudukottai, Karur, Perambalur, Cuddalore, Villupuram, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur and Nagapattinam districts, covering nine Fire Divisions and 83 fire stations.

A senior official here told The Hindu that information pertaining to number of high-rise buildings, cinema halls, shopping complexes etc and safety measures provided in them, number of fire calls reported, loss of property owing to fire mishaps and fire fighting arrangements would all be fed into the computer.

Besides, data on the total strength of Fire and Rescue Department of the region, number of vehicles, fire fighting equipment and other logistics would also be stored. The Department has commenced the work of collecting particulars to this effect. The idea behind having a computerised database was to have consolidated information on fire hazards and safety norms to be followed in high-rise buildings, cinema halls etc, which will be of help at times of exigencies, the official said.
