SINGAPORE: The city-State of Singapore encourages, sponsors and rewards a ``59-day of madness.'' Last year, the Great Singapore Sales, which is being described as a unique reality shopping show, attracted 1.6 million visitors. This year, the Singapore Tourism Board, the retailers association and the Mastercard, who jointly promote the event, hope to cross the 2-million mark. And the revenue? It matters little, say the organisers. More than the sale-generated revenue they are more keen on doubling and tripling the transactions. And, this explains why during the shopping festival even quality upmarket malls and brands offer up to 80 per cent discounts. Declared open on May 26, the showpiece event has already attracted worldwide attention. The fast-increasing occupancy rates in hotels and travel ticket sales vouchsafe for the popularity of the event, say mall-managers.
