Letters to the Editor
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi's announcement abolishing the practice of offering poorna kumbham to VIPs visiting temples is welcome. It rightly ensures that all are equal before god. The Government should monitor the situation and see that the order is not violated, no matter what the status of the visiting VIP.
S. Nallasivan,
* * * A laudable step, but I wonder if the temple authorities will be emboldened enough to implement it. Such attempts in the past have met with little success in places such as Tirupati and Guruvayur. What is required is a change in the mindset of VIPs themselves.
R. Ramachandra Rao,
* * * The decision is unwarranted and amounts to interference in the legitimate functional freedom of temples. The practice of poorna kumbham is centuries old and is similar to presenting a shawl to a dignitary on the stage or presenting a military guard of honour.
K.S. Gopalakrishnan,
