This refers to the article, `Seduced by an elusive idea of India' (May 26). What the author fails to understand is that it does not matter what India looks like. Rather than worry about India's dual image, he should celebrate the progress it has made since the 1990s. Instead of worrying about whether the West truly understands and respects us, maybe we Indians should worry about whether we truly understand and respect ourselves.

* * * While it is true that the idea of an "exotic" India is deeply ingrained in the minds of a lot of people outside India, it is also true they recognise the huge strides by the country in many areas and the talent and potential that exists here. That is what has started the trend of medical tourism and what brings American Ivy League students for internships to Indian facilities.
