Banning Fanaa is murder of democracy: Mallika

Mirrors rising intolerance in Hinduism

Ahmedabad: The enforcement of a ban on Aamir Khan-starrer Fanaa in Gujarat by the BJP Yuva Morcha was nothing but murder of democracy, noted danseuse and theatre artist Mallika Sarabhai said here on Sunday.

Talking to UNI, during the inauguration of `Depot' store, Ms. Mallika said Hinduism and democracy both have advocated freedom of speech and expression, and "suffocating anyone's voice or opinion is not Hinduism."

"Hinduism's core preaching and teaching is based on debate and the very essence of such debates have created invaluable `granths' such as Vedantas, Bhagwad Geetha and others which keep the religion intact from impurity, she said. Preventing Aamir Khan's expression only mirrored rising intolerance in Hinduism which could weaken the very fabric of Indian democracy, she added.

The movie Fanaa has been banned by the Gujarat Multiplex Owners Association (GMOA).

The GMOA took the decision in protest against the star's support to Narmada Bachao Andolan chief Medha Patkar on the Narmada issue.
