India offers help to Indonesia

P. S. Suryanarayana

SINGAPORE : India's offer of assistance to quake-hit Indonesia has been conveyed by Defence Minister Pranab Mukherjee, now on tour of East Asia.

In a message from Tokyo late at night on Saturday, Mr. Mukherjee told Indonesian Defence Minister Juwono Sudarsono that India stood "ready to extend all possible assistance and cooperation to the friendly people of Indonesia."

India's sense of "deep distress" over the devastating earthquake was also emphasised.

Indian Navy had joined the navies of the United States, Australia, and Japan to form a "core group" that rushed to the aid of Indonesia in the wake of the tsunami of December 2004.
