Four killed in lightning

Rains, thunderstorm lash several parts of U.P.

Lucknow: Four persons were killed and as many injured when they were struck by lightning in Azamgarh district, police said on Sunday. People in parts of Uttar Pradesh heaved a sigh of relief from the sweltering heat as rains and thunderstorm in Sultanpur, Lucknow and Azamgarh districts brought down temperature.

Lucknow, which received 2.4 mm rainfall, recorded 33.8 degrees Celsius, while Varanasi recorded 34 C, Sultanpur 38 C and Bareilly 33 C, Met office sources said. Sultanpur had 20.5 mm rains and Bareilly 2.6 mm, they said, adding the maximum temperature of 43 C in the State was recorded in Jhansi district. Rains and thunderstorm affected communication as telephone and electric poles were uprooted besides disrupting vehicular traffic in these areas, sources said.

Heat wave in Rajasthan

Heat wave continued to affect normal life in Rajasthan and there was no respite from the scorching heat across the State. Jaisalmer was the hottest city on Sunday with a maximum temperature of 47.1 degree Celsius, around 3 degree above normal, Met office sources said. Jaipur recorded a maximum temperature of 44.3, while Ajmer recorded 43.3, Kota 46.0, Dabok 44.6, Barmer 44.3, Pilani 46.5, Sriganganagar 46.7, Jodhpur 44.0, Bikaner 46.9 and Churu 46.2 degree Celsius. Met sources said increase in mercury level is likely in most parts of the State with a possibility of thundershower and duststorm in eastern areas, and some rains. The western part of the State will remain hot and humid in the next two days, they added. -- PTI
