Home Secretary leaves for Islamabad today; talks to focus on terrorism, narcotics

NEW DELHI : Union Home Secretary V.K. Duggal is leaving for Islamabad on Monday for Home Secretary-level talks with Pakistan.

These talks are part of the ongoing composite dialogue between the two countries.

As a goodwill gesture, India is releasing 59 Pakistani fishermen and Pakistan is freeing 71 fishermen on Monday, a Home Ministry spokesman has said.

Increased cooperation

The talks on May 30 and 31 will focus on the recent spurt in terrorist activities in Jammu and Kashmir and the need for increased cooperation on drugs and narcotics control.

The emphasis will be on continuing the peace process and increasing people-to-people contact. The Pakistani side will be led by Interior Secretary Syed Kamal Shah.

Eight-member team

Mr. Duggal will be accompanied by an eight-member delegation, which includes the Director-General of the Narcotics Control Bureau and senior officers from the Central Bureau of Investigation and the External Affairs Ministry.

Talks at this level were last held on August 30 and 31, 2005, in Delhi.

UNI reports:

India is likely to stress on the closure of 59 militant camps operating from across the border.

It will remind Pakistan of its commitments not to allow Pakistan Occupied Kashmir to be used for terror activities.
