Pondicherry legislators take oath in Assembly

Pro tem Speaker conducts proceedings

Pondicherry : A. V. Sreedharan as pro tem Speaker conducted the proceedings of the Territorial Assembly on Monday.Earlier, the Lt. Governor M. M. Lakhera inducted Mr. Sreedharan as member of the Assembly around noon at a function in the Rajnivas.

The session began with `Tamizh Thaai Vazhthu.' . Mr. Sreedharan then told the House that he was pleased to see that the recent elections to the Assembly went off peacefully.

He then took up the scheduled business of inducting the new legislators. Starting from the Chief Minister all the members took oath, marking their induction as members of the 12th Assembly of the Union Territory.

E Valsaraj and Malladi Krishna Rao (new Ministers) took the oath in English and Telugu respectively, while the others including the three independents took the oath in Tamil. Partywise break up of the 30-member House is: Congress (10) Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (seven), Pattali Makkal Katchi (two) Communist Party of India (one) and Independents (three).

On the Opposition side, the AIADMK and the Puduchery Munnetra Congress have three members each, while the Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam has one.

Earlier, Secretary to the Assembly M. Sivaprakasam read out the notification of the Election Commission of India announcing the formation of the new Assemblyafter the elections held on May 8 to the territorial Assembly.

He also read out two orders of the Lt. Governor relating to the appointment of Mr. Sreedharan as pro tem speaker and the duties of the Speaker.

After the members' induction, the Mr. Sreedharan adjourned the House to June 1.
