Somnath expresses grief

NEW DELHI: Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee has expressed shock and grief at the loss of a number of lives in the earthquake that shook Indonesia.

In a message to Agung Laksono, Chairman of the Indonesian Parliament, Mr. Chatterjee expressed anguish and said it was sad that nature struck parts of the country with another calamity just when it was recovering from the destruction caused by the tsunami in December 2004.

``On behalf of the Parliament of India, the people of India and on my own behalf, I would like to express to Your Excellency and the people of Republic of Indonesia our heartfelt condolences and solidarity."
