Not a good sign

The failure of the talks between the Government and the striking medicos is not a good sign. The Government should have applied more wisdom in dealing with the matter. The burning issue of reservation for backward classes should be considered in its entirety rather than on a piece-meal basis. The issue could take a different turn if agitations against the present strike take shape and intensify. The powers that be in the education and social sectors should strive to build some consensus on the issue without harming anybody's interest.

C.P. Velayudhan Nair,
Kochi, Kerala

The brilliant cartoon by Keshav (May 29) lucidly explains the quota quagmire created by the wily Human Resource Development Minister Arjun Singh into which every UPA leader, except of course Mr. Singh himself, appears to be sinking.

Col. C.V. Venugopalan (retd.),
Palakkad, Kerala

In the name of protecting the rights of the minorities and backward classes, political parties are playing with the lives of the people. Instead of opening the gates of institutions of higher education to all citizens, the Government wants to restrict the number to a certain level to maintain the capitalist structure of society and safeguard the interests of the creamy layer among all communities.
