Corrections and clarifications

  • The names of several prominent Indian artists were misspelt in "Indian art gains `serious investors'" ("Newscape", May 25, 2006), a report on an art auction held in London recently. The correct names are M.F. Husain, N.S. Bendre, Anjolie Ela Menon, Arpana Kaur and Yusuf Arakkal, and not S.H. Hussein, N.S Bandre, Angolie Ela Menon, Arpna Kaur and Yusuf Aarakkal, as published.

  • "Man in possession of secret documents arrested" read the heading (May 27, 2006), a report on how a 17-year-old youth was arrested on charges of possessing secret documents and maps pertaining to the space centre at Sriharikota. It should have been "Youth in possession of secret documents arrested", as a reader says. It was wrong to have mentioned his name in the text, as he is a juvenile.

  • A reader wonders whether the heading "Crisis in East Bengal", in "This Day That Age — from the pages of The Hindu dated May 26, 1956" ("Variety", May 26, 2006), was correct. During the period between Partition and the emergence of Bangladesh, the country was called East Pakistan. Was it also called East Bengal, he asks. Bengal was divided into two provinces on July 3, 1946 in preparation for the partition of India — the Hindu-majority West Bengal and the Muslim-majority East Bengal. The two provinces each had their own Chief Minister. In August 1947, West Bengal became part of India and East Bengal became part of Pakistan. In 1955, most of the western wing was combined to form a new West Pakistan province while East Bengal became the new province of East Pakistan. This system lasted until 1971 when East Pakistan declared independence and the new nation of Bangladesh was formed.

  • In "Corrections and Clarifications" (May 23, 2006), we had said that the number of people who watched (on television) the 1998 World Cup in France was 37 billion globally. A few readers have asked how this could be, when the world population itself is seven billion. The figure of 37 billion is of all those who watched all the matches on the 33 days the World Cup tournament ran. It was played between June 10, 1998 and July 12, 1998, and had a total of 64 matches.

  • In "Connoisseur's delight" (Tamil Nadu and Chennai city, Friday Review, May 26, 2006), a review of the CD "Flowers at His Feet", a reader says Tallapaka Annamacharya has been incorrectly referred to as Tallapakkam Annamacharya. Also, it is Tirumala hills, and not Tirumalai, as published.

  • In "Stargazing" (Tamil Nadu and Chennai city, Friday Review, May 26, 2006), under the heading "Lighting up the stage", the Thygaraja krithi Dorakunaa Ituvanti Seva has been misspelt as Dorakunna Idhuvanti Seva. Sankaracharya Vrichitham should have been Sankaracharya Virachitham, says a reader.

  • Clue 19 Down in The Hindu Crossword 8614 ("Variety", May 27, 2006) was missing. The solution on Monday, May 29, 2006 gives the word as "Copious".
