Red sander smuggling: SI suspended

Special Correspondent

TIRUPATI: In a sensational case of forest officials confiscating a police vehicle near Tirupati for allegedly trying to smuggle red sander logs, Superintendent of Police, Chittoor, V.V. Gopalakrishna on Monday placed under suspension his camp clerk, Sudhakar, and Sub-Inspector of Yerravaripalem Jayaram Nayak for alleged complicity in the incident.

He told The Hindu that a departmental enquiry has been ordered into the episode and asserted that there was no question of the department showing any leniency towards the offenders.

It may be recalled that the episode occurred on the eve of Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy's visit to Tirupati on Sunday for an official programme. While media reports claimed that the Chief Minister who happened to read the news stories on board his helicopter had given the police authorities a dressing down on landing at Tirupati, the authorities denied them and asserted that the suspension and the departmental enquiry were ordered on their own as per the prescribed rules.
