Power crisis hits Lucknow

Many posh localities without power due to technical snags

LUCKNOW: Even as the power situation in Uttar Pradesh has improved a bit with the Northern Grid becoming stable, the situation here in the State Capital is far from satisfactory with many posh localities going without power because of technical snags.

While the residents of trans-Gomti localities of Gomtinagar, Indiranagar, Niralanagar, Vikasnagar and Mahanagar are an aggrieved lot, at many places angry residents came out on the streets to protest against erratic power supply during the last few days. Incidentally, the trans-Gomti areas comprise some VIPs colonies like Dalibagh and important government offices like the Director-General of U.P. Police.

The dismal power supply added to the woes of the residents by affecting water supply to a great deal at many places.

There are reports of public display of anger by residents in Niralanagar, Vikasnagar, Triveninagar and Daliganj following frequent breakdowns.

People entered into scuffle with power employees at many power sub-stations of Lucknow during the last few days.

It is for the first time, since the power crisis hit the State about a month ago that Lucknow had to face hardships.

The State Capital has been among the few cities of U.P. to be exempted from power cuts, but the recent breakdowns had affected the normal life to a great extent.

When contacted, the Lucknow Electric Supply Authority officials admitted to the poor state of power supply here. "It is due to some maintenance problem and would take a couple of days to restore normal supply."

Overloading on transformers and uprooting of electricity poles and wires during recent storm have made power authorities work overtime to maintain the supply, officials added. -- UNI
