MCD completes

de-sealing exercise

NEW DELHI: The Municipal Corporation of Delhi on Monday completed the de-sealing exercise in the Capital following the notification of the Delhi Laws (Special Provisions) Act, 2006, on May 20.

During the drive that began on May 23, the MCD squads de-sealed more than 8,000 shops barring 500 properties whose owners failed to turn up before the municipal authorities to submit their documents.

Sheila Dikshit leaves for Moscow

NEW DELHI: Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit along with a seven-member official delegation left for Moscow on Monday morning to take part in "The Day of Delhi in Moscow" that was inaugurated jointly by the Mayor of Moscow and the Chief Minister later in the evening.

The inaugural programme saw performances by Kalapini Komkali, daughter of Pandit Kumar Gandharva, and sarod maestro Ustad Amjad Ali Khan.

IGNOU examinations to start from June 1

NEW DELHI: The term-end examinations for various programmes of Indira Gandhi National Open University will start from June 1. Over 2.5 lakh students are expected to appear in these examinations at 548 centres across the country.

Among them are about 300 jail inmates who will take these examinations at centres set up in 12 jails.

Hall tickets for the examinations have been despatched to the students. Those who have not received their ticket so far can download them from the IGNOU website www.ignou.ac.in.

Candidates will have to carry their identity cards to the centres.

Relay hunger strike

NEW DELHI: The ten-day relay hunger strike by the Central Health Employees' Federation entered its seventh day on Monday. The group C and D health employees are protesting against "illegal termination'' of the service of Kundan Singh of the Central Institute of Psychiatry in Ranchi.

According to a CHEF release, Kundan was instrumental in mobilising the employees against privatisation of services at the Institute.

New appointment

NEW DELHI: G. N. Karna, president of the Society for Disability and Rehabilitation Studies, has been nominated member of the Steering Committee on Social Welfare and Other Special Groups. The Planning Commission has also appointed Dr. Karna as chairman of the Working Group on Empowering the Disabled constituted by it.

Afflicted by polio in both his legs at an early age, Dr. Karna has never let his disability stand in his way of achieving academic milestones. He has done his doctoral and post-doctoral studies at Jawaharlal Nehru University.
