NEW DELHI: A main factor responsible for the defeat in the 2004 Lok Sabha elections of the National Democratic Alliance was the "failure of more than 50 per cent of BJP MPs to win again," BJP president Rajnath Singh said. He said the party had reviewed the results and came to the conclusion that "there was something lacking in our efforts to create a place for ourselves in the hearts of the people." The elected representatives in the party and its office-bearers should see this as a lesson. Wherever the BJP was in power, a great responsibility fell on its governments and its party workers. The people should feel that the BJP government is their own. Something was clearly amiss if more than 50 per cent of the party MPs and other elected representatives failed to get re-elected.
