`Design special buildings for special people'

Speaking at the 23rd Convocation of the School of Planning and Architecture here, Dr. Swaminathan said attempts should be made to ensure that the benefits of modern architecture also reached the rural people.

Appreciating the fact that the School of Planning and Architecture had got the status of a deemed university, Dr. Swaminathan said the institute has gained recognition both nationally and internationally.

Earlier, the Institute of Town Planners (India) president, D.S. Meshram, said a majority of the country's population would be living in towns and cities by the year 2031. "By that time, India would no longer be predominantly rural. Metropolises and other large urban settlements will urgently require urban planners, urban managers and architects," he added.

The Director of the School, Subir Saha, awarded degrees to successful students.
