This Day That Age
The President, Dr. Rajendra Prasad, emphasised on May 30 the need for introducing the basic education scheme throughout the country. He said that as its name itself indicated, it should be given fundamental importance in the Five-Year Plan. The President, who was addressing the All-India Basic Education Conference at Kancheepuram, referred to the aims of basic education and expressed the hope that it would succeed in bringing about a change of heart in the people towards removing social disparities. Acharya Vinoba Bhave inaugurated the conference, which is being attended by over 2,000 delegates. Kakasaheb Kalelkar, President of the Hindustani Talimi Sangh, who presided, said that they must evolve a non-violent, non-exploiting scheme of national existence where defence would be always unnecessary and when it became necessary it should be absolutely non-violent.
