Liberalisation has set new trends in banking. Customer-friendly practices are undergoing innovation frequently. New products are being added every other day. The ATM, owned by a particular bank, now transacts business of various other banks too, thanks to the `plastic card' revolution. This trend will continue and the bank branches of the future will be product-centric rather than conforming to a brand. This would mean that the customer might be able to get the products of a variety of banks from the same branch. The service and the products will be in focus and not the bank as such. This perspective on the future of banking service was unveiled in a speech delivered by K.S. Harshan, executive director of Federal Bank, at a seminar on new business environment, organised by a management business school here.
