CHENNAI: Lions Club of Central Madras observed `Helen Keller Day' on Monday. Guest of Honour and noted Ophthalmologist S.S. Badrinath suggested that a mobile, detachable operation theatre be used for the benefit of tribal communities living in interior parts of the country. "About 70 per cent of our people live in villages and 70 per cent of our doctors live in cities," he said.
Noble endeavour
Chief Guest for the function, N. Murali, Managing Director, The Hindu , said there could not be a nobler endeavour than restoration of vision for the visually impaired and said the Lions movement as a whole stood for the `Sight first' campaign. "Sankara Nethralaya is one of the foremost institutions in providing high quality eye care. Lions Club cannot find something better than the institution or Dr. Badrinath. We must all salute the selfless and dedicated team of doctors," he said. Past district governor G.V. Raman summed up various activities of the club. Members, including Lion S. Raghavan and Lion E.S. Krishnan, were honoured for their contributions to the cause. Among others present were C.T. Natesan, president of the club, S.N. Harinarayanan, chairman, `sight first' and S. Natarajan, district governor.
